Up to 20 percent more expensive storage - AI drives up prices

Hard drives from Western Digital and Seagate have become up to 20 percent more expensive - and are expected to become even more expensive during the year.

Western Digital announced at the beginning of April that there is a shortage of hard drives as demand has exceeded the possible production rate. The reason is the sharply increasing demand for high-capacity storage used in AI-powered servers. The result was increased prices of between 10-20 percent.

Recently, hard drive manufacturer Seagate also announced that they are raising the price of their storage products, partly because of the strong demand, but also because of increased costs due to inflation along with difficulties in obtaining components.

The industry itself believes that prices may continue to rise, with an increase of up to an additional 10 percent during the second quarter of the year.
